I don't understand it either.
They could've left the servers alone as is, or combined them into one. Left up for a small fee of five bucks a month. What you get is a 3D chat game with the options to do missions and PVP or create your own story. No reason for that entire deletion of the game.
Money is money and with a lowered monthly fee they may have had more people stay or try it, boosting the player base.
I just miss logging in before work and seeing everyone and wish more then anything one day we will be able to do just that.
