Have you tried rebooting? Sounds silly, but I'm just curious.
I have the same problem. I get the launcher, but it keeps asking for my login and password. Which do I use? I followed the Idiot's Guide but I guess I'm a bigger Idiot than they thought.
Read the guide again or search the forums a little bit.

I found the answer!!! I had the same problem, but chances are you are trying to click the launcher.exe/matrix.exe. But really you are supposed to pick the whole folder and click choose. Hope that helped
"Could not initialize internet connection" happens when you launch mxo itself, not my launcher thing

But yes, obviously you need to choose the dir, as thats what its asking you
I've been having this problem as well. I'm well aware that you need a different launcher.exe file (Because I've been lurking the forums for nearly a week), but the problem is, I don't know where to download it from. I'd really appreciate it if someone could post a download link to the correct launcher.exe file that I need.
